Erasmus+ Traineeship

An Erasmus+ Traineeship at TU Graz offers you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an exciting research environment – while becoming part of a vibrant international campus community.

The traineeships are individually arranged between you, your supervisor at your home institution, and a supervisor at TU Graz. A bilateral agreement between the universities is not required.

Many trainees come to TU Graz as part of their Bachelor Project or Master's Thesis. Enrolment as an exchange student, coordinated by the International Office at TU Graz, comes with several advantages – including accident and liability insurance for on-campus activities, as well as access to various services typically available to exchange students. To begin the admission process as an exchange student, please get in touch with the International Office at an early stage (see application procedure).

Information on accomodation in Graz

Step 1: Find a supervisor at TU Graz and fill in the Learning Agreement

If you want to do a traineeship in the framework of Erasmus+, you need to have a supervisor at TU Graz and a filled in Learning Agreement. If there is no contact between your home professor and a TU Graz professor, you have to contact the appropriate institute of TU Graz directly and find yourself a supervisor in your own responsibility.

1. Find a supervisor

  • On the TU Graz website you will find an overview of all institutes with links to the respective institute pages and descriptions of the main research areas. This allows you to specifically identify those institutes that are thematically relevant to your project, and you will often also find suggestions for topics for Bachelor's or Master's theses - a good orientation aid in your search for a suitable institute.
  • Once you have found an institute, send a short application by e-mail to the head of the institute. Describe your planned internship/research area as well as your previous research experience and attach your CV.
  • Please note that the International Office - Welcome Center is unfortunately unable to support you in your search for a supervisor.

2. Complete and sign the Learning Agreement

  • Once you have received confirmation from a supervisor at TU Graz, please fill out the Erasmus+ Learning Agreement for Traineeships.
  • Refer to the official Guidelines for guidance.
  • The Learning Agreement is a contract betwee you, your home institution and the supervising institute at TU Graz and it must be signed by all three parties.
  • The Learning Agreement includes a brief description of your planned tasks and the workload in ECTS.

Important Notes

  • Please check with the International Office at your home institution to find out if there is an Erasmus+ scholarship available for your stay.
  • In some cases, additional agreements with the supervising institute may be required (e.g., a confidentiality agreement).

Step 2: Admission as a student at TU Graz

To be admitted as an official Erasmus+ trainee at TU Graz, you need to take a few more steps. The International Office - Welcome Center will be happy to assist you. In addition, you will benefit from all the advantages that exchange students enjoy as part of a mobility programme at TU Graz.

  • Once all your documents are complete, your application form will be sent to the registrar´s office of TU Graz in order to initiate your registration as a student of TU Graz. This can last some days.
  • Then, you receive an e-mail with your registration number (Matrikelnummer) and a payment request for the students union fee (see box Costs). Please pay the amount according to the instructions given in the e-mail, at your earliest convenience.
  • As soon as your payment is received, you will receive two more e-mails with the confirmation and your PIN code to log into the TU Graz online system. With that, the enrolment process is finalized, and you are an incoming student of TU Graz.
